Navigating Canadian Electrical Code Part 1
It is very important to read & understand the safety codes if you are practicing in any regulated trade in Canada. The very first thing that apprentices entering the work force must learn is to how to navigate safety codes. It is also important to note that safety codes are updated every three years or so. One must look for information in the latest version of the code book. In this post I want to share how to navigate Candian Electrical Code part 1
There are Sections, Tables and Appendix like Appendix C,D,F,G,J, K,L. One must learn to go back and forth between sections, subsections, tables and appendix to gather information and compile it to appply to a sepcific situation. Here are main sections of the Candian Electrical Code book
- Section 0 – Object,scope and definitions
- Section 2 – General rules
- Section 4 – Conductors
- Section 6 – Service and Service Equipment
- Section 8 – Circuit Loading and Demand Factors
- Section 10 – Grounding and Bonding
- Section 12 – Wiring Methods
- Section 14 – Protection and Control
- Section 16 – Class 1 and Class 2 Circuits
- Section 18 Hazardous Locations
- Section 20 – Flammable Liquids, Gasoline dispensing, service stations.garages, bulk storage plants, finishing processes and aircraft hangars
- Section 22 – Locations in which corrosive liquids, vapours or excessive moisture are likely to be present
- Section 24 – Patient Care Areas
- Section 26 – Installation of electrical equipment
- Section 28 – Motors and Genrators
- Section 30 – Installation of lightingh equipment
- Section 32 Fire Alarm Systems, Smoke Alarms, Cabon Monoxide Alarms and Fire Pumps
- Section 34 – Signs and Outline Lighting
- Section 36- High Voltage Installations
- Section 38 – Elevaotrs, dumbwaiters, materials lifts, escalators, moving walk, lifts for persons with physical disabailities and similar equipment
- Section 40 – Electric Cranes and Hoists
- Section 42 – Electric Welders
- Section 44 – Theator Installations

- Section 52 – Diagnostic imaging installations
- Section 54 – Community antenna distribution,radio and televison
- Section 56 – Optical fibre cables
- Section 58 – Passenger ropeways and similar equipment
- Section 60 – Electrical Communication Systems
- Section 62 – Fixed Electric Heating Systems
- Section 64 – Renewable Energy Systems, Energy Production Systems and Energy Storage Systems
- Section 66 – Amusement Parks, Midways, Carnivals, Film & Tv sets, TV remote broadcasting locations and travelling shows.
- Section 68 -Pools, Tubs and Spas
- Section 70 – Electrical requirements for factory -built relocatable structures and non relocatable structures.
- Section 72 – Mobile Homes and Recreational Vehicle Parks
- Section 74 – Airport Installations
- Section 76 – Temporary Wiring
- Section 78 – Marine wharves, docking facilities, fixed and floating piers and boathouses
- Section 80 – Cathodic Protection
- Section 84 – Interconnection of electric power production sources
- Section 86 – Electric Vehicle Charging Systems
- Tables
- Appendix C, Appendix D, AppendixF, Appendix G,Appendix J, Appendix K, Appendix L
Now let us talk about any section for basic understanding. Let us navigate to section 8 that talks about Circuit loading and demand factors.
Section starts with 8-000 defining the scope that this section applies to explaing
a) Maximum circuit loading,
b) Calculated loads for consumer’s service, feeders and brsnch circuits
c) Use of demand factors
d) brnach circuit positions required for dwelling units and
e) Heater receptacles for vehicles.
As you navigate each sub section of this section 8 there are rules and subrules that one can read and apply to different situations. For example calculating voltage drop and sizing up conductors based on lenghth and voltage drop read and interpret what section 8-102 explains. It also mentions to look at the Appendices B and D. It reads as
8-102 Voltage drop( see appendices B and D) then there are subrules
- rule 1 then subrules a) and b) then rule 2,3,4
I will share a link to one of my YouTube Videos so readers can have idea how to navigate and interpret the safety codes.
